Blue Mass

On September 29, 1934, a tradition of showing gratitude to emergency responders began when a Catholic priest from the Archdiocese of Baltimore organized the Catholic Police and Firemen’s Society while stationed at St. Patrick Church in Washington, D.C. On that September day, over 1,000 police and firemen, dressed in their blue uniforms, attended a Mass that has since come to be known in churches across the country as the “Blue Mass”.
The Archdiocese of St. Louis continues that tradition of gratitude as we celebrate the Annual Blue Mass on Sunday, September 8, at 10:00 a.m. Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski and the pastoral staff of the Cathedral Basilica invite all to join us in prayer, seeking God’s blessing upon those who serve and protect.
